Volgens de Drowned In Sound Magazine, UK 2008: The Black Napkins spelen met een bovennatuurlijk en democratisch begrip voor elkaar. Elk aandeel wordt een bron van geluid, alle priemende geluiden vormen een geheel en komen tesamen juist waar het nodig is; een solide beat en gigantische blokken noise die je perplex doen staan na de stilte waaruit ze zijn voortgekomen. Ok, het is jazz als je het per sé zo wilt noemen, maar je kunt het zoveel dingen noemen waarmee je gedeeltelijk gelijk zou hebben zonder daar echt de kern mee te vatten. Shackle is Anne LaBerge on flute and electronics and Robert van Heumen on laptop. Their aim is to explicity and subtly exploit shackling in both concept and material. Their performance is guided by a network system that proposes compositional paths to the players. Both players have the choice to cooperate with the system or to make suggestions. Their work is the result of an ongoing exploration of restrictions, both sonically and conceptually. http://hardhatarea.com/shackle.html

The inspiration for this project came from both the music of Albert Ayler and the Maarten Luther Kerk, where this ensemble first performed together. Albert Ayler was a deeply spiritual musician who created some of the most blindingly passionate music of all time. Given an opportunity to perform in the Maarten Luther Kerk, it made sense to do something of an abstract tribute to the late saxophonist. Even with Ayler s music as a base, this concert will be freely improvised. The ensemble will not be performing the compositions of Albert Ayler. In fact, the music may not even resemble the music of Ayler, instead his music will simply serve as an inspiration for the performance.
