ZAPP! string quartet is an extraordinary string quartet which is specialized in playing improvised music, jazz, rock, ethnic music, contemporary music and all kinds of combinations of these styles. There is a long string quartet tradition in classical music. ZAPP! adds its own groovy way of playing and percussion techniques to it, which enables them to sound like a heavy rock band, a bulgarian folkgroup or a bebopping jazz band as well. All the members of ZAPP! have a background as an improviser and they all compose or arrange music for the quartet. Additionaly, composers from the Netherlands and abroad regularly compose for ZAPP!
The quartet plays concerts on a regular basis, often accompanied by Vera van der Poel on vocals. ZAPP! string quartet also plays a program called 'Chamber Grooves', with David Kweksilber on clarinet / bass clarinet and Jozef Dumoulin (Belgium) on the piano / Fender Rhodes as special guests. This 'Chamber Grooves' program, written by Oene van Geel, was commissioned by the VPRO (radio) for the SJU jazz festival 2002. In March 2002 the debut CD of ZAPP!, 'Dextro', was released. Special guests on this CD are Vera van der Poel (vocals) and Jeffrey Bruinsma (violin). |
