The Dutch record company X-OR is named after a logical term which means: a combined statement is true if only one of the two propositions is true. In other words: you can only have a slice of bread with marmalade or one with chocolate, and not one with marmalade and chocolate!
As a metaphor for the record label's policy, the term stands for the choice of clear and radical, uncompromising music. In this policy, the emphasis is on improvised and electronic music, although contemporary music and rock are also included.
The X-OR record company was founded by composer / saxophonist Luc Houtkamp, who has for many years collaborated with percussionist Gert Jan Prins in developing the X-OR catalogue. Presently, Houtkamp works together with guitarist Wiek Hijmans to further expand the label into new directions.
