The second album of DUMItRIO creates an entrancing ambiance with Romanian flavours, supported by narrative-intuitive compositions and spontaneous improvisations. Band leader and composer George Dumitriu, steered the trio into new musical directions by cultivating in their repertoire elements of oral and musical Romanian folklore. Offering insights into traditional Romanian wisdom, the structure of the new album is built on four Romanian proverbs spoken by Mama-mare (the composer’s grandmother).  The recording of her voice was played back in a loops which inspired DUMItRIO’s improvisations with their natural irregular metrics and dynamics.

The sublime addition of violin, viola and cello fashions a new dimension to the sound of the guitar trio.

George Dumitriu –viola, violin, guitar
Mattia Magatelli – contrabass, electric bass
Kristijan Krajnčan – cello, drums
Cornelia Popa is speaking 4 Romanian proverbs.

“A captivating atmosphere, informed by Romanian folk music and buttressed by the readings of native proverbs and unstructured improvisations. The versatility of the musicians adds to the subtle variety of moods, making each piece a fresh start.” –
Karl Ackermann, All About Jazz

“The sound of the ensemble is an intriguing en fluid mix of jazz, folk and contemporary chamber music sounds, made exciting by the interplay between the musicians”.
Ken Vos, Jazzism

“The fascinating string sounds are reminiscent of the ambient music of Brian Eno. This makes ‘Proverbe’ a very varied cd”
Herman te Loo, Jazzflits

“The doubling by the trio gives this music greater dimension, much of it built around repetitive sounds which give a foundation for improvisation from members of the trio.”
Papatamus, Cadence

Having met in the North of Netherlands and identifying their intuitive connection, the three European musicians are gathering their forces to explore a vast musical territory. The foundation that they’re building on is jazz but the architecture is made out of elements of classical music, post-rock, alternative, electro, Romanian folklore. Spontaneous improvisation and extreme dynamics are some of their most important features. As leader of the group, the Romanian polyinstrumentalist George Dumitriu is the main provider of compositions, but without shadowing the lyrical music of the Italian bassist, nor the polyrithmics and complex structures used by the Monk Competition semifinalist Slovenian drummer in his compositions. DUMItRIO performed in the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Slovenia, Romania and released the albums Future Nostalgia (FN 2014) and Proverbe (TryTone 2017).
